And these recuts of Fire Walk With Me are not the only Lynch ‘fan edits’ in existence. While he may have removed his name from the notorious extended TV cut of Dune – that version is credited to director Alan Smithee and writer Judas Booth, a reference presumably to Frank, John Wilkes, or both – 2021 would see the unveiling of an excellent 3-hour cut put together by an editor known only as ‘spicediver’, and based on the original Lynch script. In 2023, this version even received the unexpected honour of being officially released, as part of a six-disc German Blu-ray package.

Meanwhile, also in 2014, the arrival of a 51-minute selection of deleted scenes from Blue Velvet – compiled, again, by Lynch – has led to several extended cuts of that film, featuring scenes like Jeffrey’s forced departure from university, more of his dotty Aunt Barbara, and the long-rumoured scene where Dorothy attempts to throw herself off the roof of her building, only to be prevented by Jeffrey. However, while interesting, these scenes are by no means as crucial as The Missing Pieces

‘Your Laura disappeared. It’s just me now’

In the years following the release of Fire Walk With Me, Lynch would be philosophical about the film’s reception: ‘It was what it was supposed to be,’ he told Empire in 2001, ‘but it wasn`t what people wanted.’19 Repeatedly, he would stress that the experience was different from Dune, because in this instance he was happy with the work he’d done. ‘With Dune, I sold out . . . because I didn’t have final cut, and it was a commercial failure, so I died two times with that,’ he told Deadline in 2017. ‘With Fire Walk With Me, it didn’t go over well at the time, but I loved it so I only died once.’ In Room to Dream, he insists that he didn’t take the experience to heart, admitting ‘that was a horrible, horrible stressful time’, but insisting that he ‘recovered quickly . . . and bounced back and got to work’.20

Others, however, tell a rather different story. In an interview with The Guardian, Angelo Badalamenti would say that, ‘for David, it was like somebody had taken away his kid and was murdering the child’,21 while in Room to Dream Lynch’s biographer Kristine McKenna observes that ‘Lynch began turning inward at that point.’22 The total critical and commercial failure of his and Frost’s second series On the Air (see here) around the same time can only have deepened Lynch’s sense of despondency. ‘When the black cloud comes over, there’s nothing you can do about it,’ he would tell LA Weekly in 2001.
